While I do like 'Old Man's War', I prefer Scalzi when he is trying to be funny. The only other novel by Scalzi that I read - I followed his blog for ages and have read some of his shorter works - was the weird and wonderful "Android's Dream". Do try that out.
BTW: I don't know if you have read it, but Joe Haldeman's "Forever War" is also occasionally compared to "Old Man's War".
BTW2: Before Avatar released, there was some chatter about the fact that the blue bodies of Avatar and Old Men in this book. This was Scalzi's response: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2009/11/01/yes-its-coincidence/
Thanks for the recommendations. I'm definitely going to make SF a bigger part of my reading challenge next year, I will add both these to my list. Scalzi's piece on the coincidence involving Cameron's turd of a movie was interesting reading too, thanks!
